Glasurit History

A name that stands for tradition and quality

By the time Glasurit registered its parrot icon as a protected trademark in 1925, the brand had already established a reputation for high-quality, durable glazes and paint finishes.

In 1888, founder Max Winkelmann started his paint and enamel company in Hamburg, Germany. The enterprise that would come to be known as Glasurit had its first success in 1893 with “Crystal White,” an enamel applied to ocean liners. In 1964 Glasurit introduced 54 Line, the first metallic basecoat line for automotive refinishing. A year later, BASF Aktiengesellschaft in Ludwigshafen, Germany acquired Glasurit. To this day, the brand continues to stand for the highest quality refinish paint in the aftermarket industry.

Throughout its history, Glasurit has been the global standard for speed, durability and shine. In 1992, the brand was one of the first to develop a waterborne system. BASF has continuously engineered the “DNA” in Glasurit paints for speed and durability, color-match and ease-of-use. In 1995 and 1996, BASF launched Glasurit 22 Line and 55 Line, adding a high-solids refinishing system and an improved solventborne to surpass the historical performance of 54 Line.

In 2017, BASF celebrated 25 years of success with 90 Line, which leads the industry in quality and technology standards. For world-class shine and unbeatable gloss, experts in many industries turn to Glasurit for a finish they can trust.
